Nyingarn makes manuscript sources of Australian Indigenous languages available as searchable and reusable text documents to support language revitalisation.
Note that all material is held on servers in Australia and that no AI is trained on any material in Nyingarn. We use Amazon’s Textract for OCR and have opted out of their use of any items in this workspace for AI training.
How we do this
Uploading images of manuscripts and placing these images next to searchable transcriptions of the contents, so that community can:
– Find words and other information, and
– Check the original source
The process
Nyingarn is in two stages:
(i) The Workspace – this is where manuscripts are uploaded, transcribed, shared with community members and prepared for consultation to decide the accessibility of those manuscripts.
(ii) The Repository – where manuscripts are made available to a wider group of people, and where restricted access can be instituted.
